Hester Street (HST) assisted with the stakeholder engagement for a long-term neighborhood-wide resiliency project in Red Hook, Brooklyn, an area that was severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy and continues to be at risk. A unique area of the city that has a rich industrial past, the neighborhood is characterized by a vibrant mix of warehouse buildings, small scale residential and retail areas and a large public housing population. HST was part of an inter-disciplinary consultant team led by Dewberry comprised of engineers, urban designers, landscape architects and environmental specialists studying the technical feasibility of a $100 million Integrated Flood Protection System (IFPS) project for Red Hook. The IFPS system will consist of various interventions that will act together as a flood and climate change defense system to reduce the flood risks from coastal and rainfall induced flooding and sea level rise within the Red Hook study area.
