The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) and Hester Street (HST), with the support of State Senator Daniel Squadron, worked with artists Chat Travieso and Sam Holleran to create a temporary public art installation for the newly reconstructed South Street waterfront greenway. The installation, We Call this Place Home, was developed with the local community over the course of one summer and installed in the fall. HST worked with the artist team to engage local stakeholders to share what home means to them and create colorful shapes that symbolize their stories. The shapes were cut out, painted and installed along the newly protected bike lane on South Street in the Lower East Side and will remain for one year.
