Hester Street (HST) worked with the Robin Hood Foundation to engage public school students as part of their L!brary Initiative. Robin Hood hired HST to work in 15 different schools citywide; engaging 450 students and 30 teachers in the library design process through a series of educational workshops. Students studied symbol languages and developed their own symbols that interpreted selections from the core literary collection of the new libraries. These workshops were designed to reinforce goals of increasing student literacy, enhance each school’s sense of ownership over their new library, and culminated in the creation of a student generated graphics for each library.
