Hester Street is partnering with the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) to let you know about a new initiative the City is kicking off to help more Black-owned businesses start and grow in New York City. Entrepreneurship empowers a family for generations. However, while more than 20% of New Yorkers are Black, they own only 2% of businesses. Existing Black-owned businesses also tend to be smaller — hiring only 3% of employees in NYC. There is tremendous opportunity to empower more Black entrepreneurs across the five boroughs.
Over the next few months, SBS will be listening and learning about the unique challenges Black entrepreneurs face in New York City. This winter, they will report back on what they learn, and launch tailored programs to help.

Join Deputy Mayor Thompson, Commissioner Gregg Bishop, Shawn Rochester, author of The Black Tax: The Cost of Being Black in America, and Angela Yee, radio personality and entrepreneur, at a kickoff event to learn more about the initiative and share your voice to help design programs to build Black-owned businesses in NYC together.
