The Citizen Designer Internship was an after school and summer internship program that provided high school students with hands-on experience in community improvement projects. Participants developed leadership skills by playing an active role in the creation of public art and design projects, with oversight and guidance from experienced design professionals on staff at Hester Street. Citizen Designer Interns helped develop and pilot ideas, tools, and projects for Hester Street’s educational programs and neighborhood initiatives.
Example project created in collaboration with Citizen Designer Interns:
Step on Your Neighborhood – interns created prototypes for stepping stone and paver systems that could be easily made by younger students and community members. These stepping stones were then incorporated into the Sara D Roosevelt Park and the P.S. 134 community garden.
