The COVID-19 crisis has laid bare the inequities of a broken and fragile system. How our nation recovers – who receives critical support and how – will determine whether we increase inequity and divestment in low-income communities of color, or whether we can rebuild a nation where everyone can thrive.

Here at Hester Street, we have joined CBO partners, Elected officials and those on the frontlines to support relief efforts through information gathering, data analysis, design and dissemination. Projects we are are undertaking to do our part for response and recovery include:

“Excluded in the Epicenter” Survey and Report

Working with our friends at Make the Road New York, we produced a report that demonstrates, with stark data and powerful testimonials, the extent of this crisis on immigrants and New Yorkers of color across the region. The findings received media coverage in outlets like Gothamist, PIX11, El Diario and more — view the press clips here.

Nonprofit Capital Projects Resource Guide

Capital projects are tough no matter what, so we produced a useful guide for nonprofits with information, tips and resources on managing the planning, design and construction of city capital projects during this time. We are also conducting a short survey of nonprofits to gather data on the impact the crisis is having on their capital needs.

Unemployment Assistance Resource Guide

We are designing series of easy-to-use and graphic how-to guides that break down the complex requirements and processes for a variety of survival resources. Working with Asian Americans for Equality and NY Assemblymember Harvey Epstein, our first multilingual guide focuses on navigating the complex process of securing unemployment assistance.

Nonprofit Capital Projects Webinar

In collaboration with Nonprofit New York, we hosted an informational webinar to provide support to nonprofits and CBOs that are planning for, or currently undertaking, a capital project during this crisis. Make the Road New York also shared their experiences with their Community Center project that is in the construction process. View the recorded webinar here.
