High School Internships

HSC’s Citizen Designer internship program is a six-week long summer session open to both high-school and college students. We’re looking for dynamic students interested in design for social change that wish to have an in-depth experience working on a variety of projects. Interns typically commit 3-5 days per week and work in group settings in our workshop, or on site at our Lower East Side and Chinatown projects. Students who have an interest in art, design, or activism are encouraged to apply.

During the school year, HSC looks for dynamic undergraduate or graduate level interns. Students who have an interest in any of the following are encouraged to apply: urban planning, community development, architecture, public art, arts education, nonprofit management, public relations and marketing. Interns must be able to commit at least 15-20 hours per week and can be engaged in both our administrative and programmatic work. We’re looking for candidates who will be able receive school credit or outside funding for their time.

To apply for the Summer of 2012, send a resume and cover letter to Dylan House, Program Manager: dylan@hesterstreet.org

Volunteer

HSC is always looking for creative educators, fabricators, artists, designers and administrators to work on our projects. Our projects wouldn’t exist without support from dedicated volunteers. Here are some ways you can get involved:

  • Teach: Volunteer to assist HSC educators in an NYC public school classroom to help students build a project as part of our Ground Up design education program.
  • Design and Build: Help create design proposals or prepare building materials in our woodshop for public art installations, garden projects, or other public space improvements.
  • Organize: Get involved in HSC’s organizing and advocacy efforts for local community design and planning initiatives in Lower Manhattan.

To learn more about the volunteer opportunities above or to propose your own ideas to support HSC’s design work, contact Dylan House, Program Manager. We will work with you to accommodate your schedule and interests. Fill out our volunteer form and send it with a brief email to dylan@hesterstreet.org
