GROUND UP is a design-build education program which brings together local artists, activists, public school students and teachers to work directly with architects on campus and community improvement projects.

M.S. 131
(2002-Present): Ground Up at M.S. 131 is HSC's oldes design education program. Since 2002 we have engaged students in grades 6-8 at this public school in Chinatown in transforming the public spaces in their community and school through a hands-on art and design curriculum.

Each year a series of workshops taught by HSC teaching artists introduces architectural concepts and culminates in a year-end campus or community improvement project.

P.S. 134
(2004-present): HSC works with P.S. 134 to engage students in hands-on design projects and environmental education to rebuild a community garden adjacent to the school. The garden is being transformed by the students into an outdoor classroom for interdisciplinary learning.

Each year nine participating classes become architects, designers, and gardners. The workshops are ten sessions long beginning in late March through the end of the school year. Past workshops have included building planters, mosaic stepping stones, and stackable seating.
