HSC/LSS Lunar New Year Party

Thanks to everyone who came out to HSC and Leroy Street Studio’s annual Lunar New Party! Hundreds of people turned out to help us celebrate the Year of the Rabbit. Kids created LED lanterns, lunar new year masks and buttons, and everyone enjoyed performances by the Asian Americans for Equality Unicorn Dance Team. We appreciate your support, and look forward to celebrating with you again next year!
Come see the Annual Lantern Installation at Sara D. Roosevelt Park!

HSC presents the fourth annual Lunar New Year Lantern Installation at Sara D. Roosevelt Park in Chinatown. The solar-powered lanterns were created by youth of local school M.S. 131, the Chinatown YMCA and Asian Americans for Equality, working with HSC’s teaching artists.
The lantern installation was officially unveiled at a press event last Friday, February 11. Over 60 students from M.S. 131 were honored for their work and got the opportunity to see the installation in the park. Jaime Lischke, art teacher at M.S. 131, said, “Working on the lanterns with Hester Street Collaborative allows my students to be creative and bring art into the community while thinking about design and the meaning of public art. The lanterns have become an important part of our school culture and traditions.”
The lanterns will be on display in Sara D. Roosevelt Park between Hester and Grand Streets through the end of March.
