New HSC Funders & Supporters

HSC is pleased to announce that Con Edison of New York is now providing funding for our design education work in the Outdoor Classroom at P.S. 134. The generous support of Con Edison will help HSC strengthen our commitment to sustainable, environmentally focused design education for public school students living in under-resourced neighborhoods.

HSC is also pleased to announce that our innovative Ground Up Design Education Curriculum was recently awarded an Honorable Mention by the US Green Building Council’s Awards for Excellence in Green Building education.

Many thanks to our other funders and supporters who have renewed their commitment to HSC this year:
The New York State Council on the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, Borough President Scott M. Stringer, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the
Buck Family Foundation, City Parks Foundation, J.M. Kaplan Fund, Joyce Mertz-Gilmore Foundation, Jane and Daniel Och, Noam and Geraldine Gottesman, and our many individual supporters and volunteers.

Your support and commitment to HSC’s continued success is invaluable and greatly appreciated.

Allen & Pike Street Renovation Plan:

Approved & Moving Forward!

The redesign plan for the transformation of the Allen & Pike Street Pedestrian Malls into a multi-use neighborhood green space created by the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation and the NYC Department of Transportation is already moving forward!
(Rendering by NYC DOT, see flyer below)

For over a year, HSC and the UNRAP Coalition have been working to ensure that the community’s vision for the renovation of the Allen & Pike Street Malls could become a reality: its transformation into a community space that meets local safety and open space needs. The NYC Parks Department and the NYC DOT
have worked diligently to incorporate the community needs for the malls summarized in UNRAP’s community visioning report, and have produced a plan for the malls that will transform this neglected public space into a vibrant and active community park.

Visible changes are already underway on the malls. The DOT has created cross-street closures at Stanton, Broome, Hester, and Monroe, and lane striping for the new traffic patterns and bike lanes. Now, the temporary pedestrian plazas at each of the above intersections have been created, and planters and movable
furniture are being moved in to create safe, buffered spaces (with plenty of passage space for the newly created bike lanes along the length of the malls).

HSC and the entire UNRAP Coalition are thrilled to see these changes happening, and look forward to continued communication with local residents, the DOT, and the Parks Department throughout the reconstruction of this important community space and transportation corridor.

Take a look at the DOT’s flyer regarding these new changes and their future plans: http://www.nyc.gov/html/mancb3/downloads/cb3docs/allen_and_pike_flyer.pdf
